    Why it matters

Structured data describes your page in a format search engines read reliably: who wrote an article, when it was published and updated, or which questions a page answers. Google recommends JSON-LD, the format this tool produces.

Article markup helps Google show the right headline, image and dates for your story. It has no required properties, but Google recommends headline, image, datePublished, dateModified and an author with a URL.

FAQ rich results are now limited: since August 2023 Google shows them only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. FAQPage markup is still valid and describes your Q&As to other search engines, but don't expect the expandable FAQ in Google for most sites.

    Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the JSON-LD code?

In a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag anywhere in the page's HTML. The tool outputs the full tag, ready to paste. Most content management systems have a field or plugin for it.

Will FAQ schema give me rich results?

Probably not in Google: since August 2023 FAQ rich results only appear for well-known government and health sites. The markup still describes your content to other search engines.

Do the questions have to be visible on the page?

Yes. Google's guidelines say structured data must describe content visitors can see on the page. Marking up hidden content can lead to a manual action.

Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting: which should I use?

NewsArticle for news reporting, BlogPosting for blog posts and Article for anything else. Google treats all three the same way for article features.

How do I test my structured data?

Paste the code or your page URL into Google's Rich Results Test to see which features it's eligible for, and into the Schema Markup Validator to check it against schema.org.
