Score your text with Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch-Kincaid grade level, and find the sentences that run too long.
Runs in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded.
Your reading ease, grade level and longest sentences appear here once you add some text.
Paste your article or page copy. At least 100 words gives the most reliable score.
Read the Flesch Reading Ease score and the US grade level it implies.
Look at words per sentence and the share of long words to see what is pulling the score down.
Shorten the long sentences in the list, then paste the text again to check the new score.
Readers skim on the web. Short sentences and everyday words make a page easier to scan and to understand on a phone. Many US plain-language guides suggest aiming for roughly a 6th to 8th grade level for a general audience.
Both scores come from only two things: how long your sentences are and how long your words are. They can't judge accuracy, structure or tone, and a technical guide will score lower than a news brief without being worse.
Google doesn't publish a readability score as a ranking signal. The reason to use one is the reader: a plain version of a hard idea is more useful than a dense one.
Scores run from 0 to 100, and higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults follow easily, 70 and up is easy, and below 30 is very difficult. For web content, 60 or higher is a sensible goal.
It's the US school grade a reader needs to follow the text. A Flesch-Kincaid score of 8 means about 8th grade. Lower is easier.
Reading Ease is 206.835 minus 1.015 times the average words per sentence, minus 84.6 times the average syllables per word. The grade level uses the same two averages with different weights.
Tools count syllables with different rules, and some count headings, lists and numbers differently. Expect a difference of a point or two. Compare scores from the same tool over time.
Not necessarily. Specialist topics use long terms that lower the score. Use it to spot sentences that could be simpler, not as a grade for the piece.
